Dear Reader,
If you have found your way to this page, perhaps you are feeling as though the tide has come in a little too fast.
Life has a way of shifting beneath our feet. We often like to believe that life is a steady, predictable road, but as anyone living along the Northumberland coast knows, the landscape can shift in an instant. Sometimes, the challenges we face are sudden – a “rogue wave” that upturns everything we thought was secure. In those moments, therapy is about finding the strength to respond when the map has changed without your consent.
Other times, the struggle is quieter. It isn’t a storm, but a persistent fog, a feeling of disconnect, or a nagging sense of “is this it?” Our work isn’t just about surviving the gale; it’s about looking below the surface to understand the patterns that keep you anchored, allowing you to find the clarity to do things differently.
The Vision of the Causeway
The seed of Causeway Therapy was planted by Jack in 2023. Inspired by the humanistic work of Carl Rogers, he envisioned the “causeway” – a path that appears between land and sea – as a metaphor for the therapeutic journey: the gradual process of finding a way through uncertainty toward firmer ground.
To turn this vision into a professional reality, we joined forces in 2025. As co-founders, our roles allow Causeway to combine a clear, fresh guiding vision with established clinical depth. While Jack continues to hold the overall direction and business vision for the project as he completes his advanced clinical Master’s training, Jane serves as the Clinical Lead.
Bringing eight years of established experience as an Integrative Psychotherapist, Jane’s expertise allows us to lead the practice with a versatile range of therapeutic models tailored specifically to you. Together, we provide a “complete bridge” for your journey. While our work is anchored in the warmth Jack envisioned, we don’t just use one map; we draw on many. Whether you are facing a sudden “storm” or a persistent “fog,” the support you receive is designed to be as robust as it is compassionate.
Our logo–the silhouette of Holy Island Castle with a path rising from the sea–is our joint promise to you. It represents the experience of gradually finding a clearer path through difficulty, supported by a steady and thoughtful relationship. This commitment is best expressed by the aspiration of the Dalai Lama:
“May I be a guard for those who need protection; a guide for those on the path; a boat, a raft, a bridge for those to cross the flood; may I be a lamp in the darkness; a resting place for the weary, and a healing medicine for all who are sick.”
Pilgrimage and Response
Our backgrounds have taught us that we don’t always choose the stories we are dropped into. In therapy, we “read between the lines” of your life to make sense of what has happened. Often, it is the outdated narratives you’ve been told–or those you’ve told yourself–that keep you stuck; our work is to help you find the pen to write the next chapter.
To us, the Holy Island causeway isn’t just a road; it is a place of pilgrimage toward sanctuary and truth. We row out into the flood with you, helping to steady the oars until you reach the solid ground of the lighthouse.
Tides, Time, and Being Yourself
In Northumberland, we know that timing is everything. We mention the “tide times” because therapy is about more than just “fixing” a problem; it is about having a safe space where you don’t have to “perform.”
We provide a space where you can simply be yourself authentically, without judgement. Sometimes, the best way to deal with a submerged car is to realise you’re safe in the refuge hut with a hot cup of tea and someone who understands that the tide waits for no one. Therapy is about checking those tide times together–recognising when the path is safe to walk and when you might need to just sit and wait for the waters to recede.
Support for Every Part of Life
We provide a practice of integrity for everyone:
-
For Individuals: Whether responding to an unexpected crisis or seeking to understand yourself better.
-
For Couples: To navigate difficulties or manage life transitions in a healthy, respectful way.
-
For Businesses: Supporting the mental resilience of the employees who are the heartbeat of our local community.
The Depth of Your Journey
Because we offer both Counselling – focused on navigating the “here and now”–and Psychotherapy – which looks beneath the surface at deep-seated patterns – we can ensure that the support you receive is tailored specifically to the depth of your journey.
As humanistic practitioners, we bring a powerful combination of established clinical experience and fresh therapeutic energy. Most importantly, we bring our own humanity; we have both navigated our own “floods.” It is this lived experience that allows us to meet you with genuine empathy.
“We shall not cease from exploration / And the end of all our exploring / Will be to arrive where we started / And know the place for the first time.”
– T.S. Eliot
Your First Step
Taking the first step can feel like stepping into deep water. That is why we offer an initial consultation to ensure we are the right relational fit for your journey. There is no pressure–just an invitation to sit, talk, and see if we can find your path forward together.
The tide always turns. When you’re ready to find your solid ground, we are here.
With warmth and integrity,
Jane & Jack
